After clearing out my closet and finally getting rid of things like Hollister shorts that would be too short on a toddler (why was this EVER a trend?), I was left with clothes that I actually like and have actually worn in the past 12 months. However, I felt my wardrobe needed an update, but as I’m sure most of you guys can relate, I’ve got 99 problems and being broke is definitely one. That’s why I set myself a $100 budget to update my closet (I did it with $70). Check out what I bought, and how I got it on the cheap.
Cotton On- Total Spent: 39.97
For those of you who have been following my blog, I’m sure you’ve realized that my style is far more girly-chic than sexy. However, I’ve been dying to try out the cut-out trend without feeling totally naked. When I first saw this dress from the front I liked the girly floral pattern, but when I turned it around I LOVED the exposed back and cut-out. It was the perfect balance for me between girly and sexy. Oh, and the fact that this dress was 30% off and ended up costing $13.97 only deepened the love affair between me and this dress.
As I was cleaning out my closet I realized that I had plenty of dressy dresses, for example, every hideous high school homecoming dress, but not a lot of cute daytime dresses. This sunflower print dress was exactly what I was looking for and when I tried it on it was super flattering and comfortable. This will be the perfect dress for when it reaches 90 degrees in NYC and living in Antarctica seems very appealing. This dress was also 30% off and came to $10.47. Hell to the yeah.
These pants were undoubtably my favorite purchase of the week. I really wanted to try out the printed pant look but I just wasn’t sure if I could pull it off, and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a pair. That’s when these amazing pants caught my eye. I actually wore these pants yesterday and you shouldn’t be surprised if I wear these pants every single day this summer. They are the most comfortable pants EVER and they look adorable. My jaw actually dropped at the checkout counter when she told me these were 30% off coming to $7.00. Yes, that’s right, $7.00.
My friends always joke with me that I don’t have enough “going-out clothes.” I always set out on missions to buy cute crop tops and skirts and inevitably end up with another armful of jeans and cardigans. I really liked this polka-dot crop top and I know it’ll look great with a high waisted skirt for a night out. Plus, this was also 30% off and cost a whopping $7.00. Finally a store that understands that half a shirt should cost half the price.
Aerie- Total Spent: 31.61
For those of you who follow me on Instagram (are ya getting my hints yet people?) you know that I recently purchased these Aerie shorts in the pineapple print. I loved them so much that I went back and bought them in black. I figured black will go great with pretty much any outfit, plus they’re so dang comfortable I couldn’t pass up buying another pair. These shorts were $24.95 but if you check out the website they’re currently $14.99! Get on that my friends!
Hi, my name is Rachel, and I have a headband addication. I love love love headbands. Even if you look at pictures of me as a baby I’m wearing a headband in pretty much every picture. I have some pretty crazy curly hair and headbands are the perfect way to tame what I call “the lions mane.” Headbands with fun patterns like this one are my absolute favorite, plus its reversible with a pink and white polka dot print on the other side! This headband was $6.99, but since it was on clearance it was an extra 60% off and came to $2.80. Can’t beat that am I right?
I’ve noticed that delicate lace bras peeking out of tanks has become popular lately and I totally wanted to try the trend out for myself. I love the girly lilac color of this bra and I think it will look awesome peeking out underneath a white or black tank. This bra was originally $24.95, but since everything in the store was buy one get one for $10.00 this bra came to a mere $10.00!
I also had a 20% off coupon for Aerie which is how it all came to $31.61. So, my total for this wardrobe update came to $71.58, which included two dresses, a pair of pants, a shirt, a pair of shorts, a headband, and a bra. I was able to keep the price low by shopping sales at both Cotton On and Aerie. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for sales like these to keep your wardrobe packed and you wallet heavy!
Do you have any tricks for getting great deals? Any trends you wanna try out, but don’t want to spend money on? Let me know guys! Your feedback helps me write better posts!
Do you ever have one of those weeks where all your money goes out the window and then you look back and go “Wait, what did I even buy?” Well, this was one of those weeks for me between gas, a haircut ,and of course, the pitfall that is CVS. This week I went in there to buy Claritin. That is all. I walked out $50 poorer after buying nail polish, bobby pins, a shower cap and a slew of other things that I definitely didn’t need. It’s like every time I walk into CVS I start to prepare for a beauty apocalypse and convince myself that I should stock up on that extra bottle of nail polish remover “just in case.”Anywho, since I’m working this whole weekend I’ll have a little extra spending money, but I still don’t want to spend a fortune on anything. Here’s my Steals and Deals of the Week for all my fellow broke beauties.
Aeropostale: Jacquard Bustier Dress- $29.75
Now, I’ve got to be honest here: I haven’t shopped at Aeropostale in a really long time. It sort of got lost in the high school transition from Abercrombie and Hollister to Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters. That being said, I was pleaseantly surprised when I stumbled upon this adorable bustier dress and learned it was from Aeropostale! After finding this little number, I went on the Aeropostale website and found a number of great pieces. It seems to me that the company has updated their styles and I’m 100% on board. I’m loving the print and silhouette of this dress, and at $29.75, I might just have to get this floral romper as well..
Urban Outfitters: Sparkle & Fade Double-Slit Maxi Skirt- $19.99
In the heat of summer it can be monotonous to wear shorts day after day after day. That’s why I’m a huge fan of maxi skirts. Not only are they comfortable, but they’re also lightweight, not to mention adorable. When I first saw this skirt I loved the floral pattern and double slits, but I was afraid of pulling an Angelina Jolie on the red carpet with her leg sticking out. After some careful examination, A.K.A stalking Urban’s website, I think the airy, high-waisted fit should make this look completely scary leg proof. Gosh, what on earth would you guys do without these incredibly scientific anaylis’ of clothes?
Aerie: Emma Pushup Bikini Top: $24.99
If you follow me on Instagram (*cough cough* *wink wink*) you know that I recently bought this bikini at Aerie. Words cannot express how much I love this bathing suit. The pushup top is flattering without being over-the-top, and the bottoms have the perfect amount of coverage. Aerie is currently hosting their semi-annual sale, so pretty much everything on the site is discounted. If you’re in need of bathing suits I HIGHLY suggest stocking up now, especially since there is free shipping with any swim purchase. While you’re on the site buying up all of their swimwear, I might as well play devil’s advocate and recommend these shorts which are currently marked down to $14.99. They are beyond comfortable and the fun pattern is perfect for summer. You can check out how I styled these shorts on Instagram (*COUGH COUGH* *WINK WINK*)
Do you guys think you’ll buy any of these products? Do you know of any great deals going on right now? Let me know! Oh, and if by some crazy, off-chance something has prompted you to want to check out my Instagram, the link is on the main page!
Well, today officially marks the last day of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, or what I like to refer to as ‘Heaven on Earth’. I don’t know about you, but I’d do pretty much anything right now to be lounging on the beach in the French Riviera taking in the sun and celebrities. Unfortunately, waitressing isn’t quite lucrative enough for a 5-star trip and designer couture. I can’t complain though: My Memorial Day Weekend is consisting of sun, beer, and a plethora of pictures from Cannes to look through. Below I’ve compiled some of the most memorable looks from the festival as a way to wish you all a wonderful Memorial Day. So, relax by the pool, grab a margarita, and check out my Cannes Film Festival 2014 Roundup!
Queen of Cannes: Blake Lively
Okay, I had my doubts before, but I am now absolutely certain that Blake Lively is not of the human species. She is clearly some sort of genetically modified super human with retina burning beauty and an unparalleled sense of style. She let her secret out of the bag with her awe inspiring looks in Cannes. First, she wore a sexy maroon Gucci gown with a unique neckline and a lot of leg. She looks like a bronzed goddess and makes me want to lather my body in self-tanner immediately. Next, she wore a white Chanel dress which is not only gorgeous, but IT HAS POCKETS. Is there anything better in life than Chanel and pockets? I think not. I love how she wore her signature beachy waves with the couture dress, adding a fun, relaxed vibe to the look. Just when you thought she couldn’t upstage her first two looks Blake Lively was all “HAHAHA” and showed up in this flawless Gucci gown. I mean, is she kidding me ? Who looks this perfect?! She totally nailed the old-holywood glamour with the red lip and massive updo. Congrats, Blake, you win..at life.
Runner-Up: Freida Pinto
I truly adore Freida Pinto. She seems like such a lovely girl, and I was thrilled to see her have a total fashion moment at Cannes Film Festival. This nude feathered gown by Michael Kors looks absolutely gorgeous on Freida. It compliments her beautiful skin tone and the loose waves and red lip are spot-on. Love, love, love. Now, this red Oscar de la Renta gown isn’t my usual taste, but for some reason I’m obsessed with this look on Freida. I love that she kept jewelry minimal and pulled her hair back to show off the gorgeous sweetheart neckline. Can we also take a minute to talk about her gold Jimmy Choo shoes? Swooooon.
Missed the Mark: Karlie Kloss
I’m not really sure where to begin with this dress because I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here. Karlie is wearing a teal and purple lace Valentino ensemble that looks like something a witch would go to sleep in. What’s most devastating about this look is that from the neck up she looks gorgeous! Her makeup, hair and earrings are perfect, but everything else…is not. The teal, purple and black lace does not go together and it makes 21-year-old Karlie look way older than she is. Karlie is a gorgeous young supermodel, and I think she would have looked stunning in something brighter and more fitted. I think your bestie Taylor Swift would say you should never ever ever get back together with this dress.
What do you guys think? Who was your best dressed? Worst dressed? Let me know!
You guys have no idea how much it has been killing me that the 2014 Met Ball Gala coincided with finals week. It was like some cruel cruel joke cast by the fashion gods. Luckily, finals are behind me and I can FINALLY write about one of my favorite events of the year. As I’m sure many of you already know, the theme for this year’s Met Ball was “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” James was a designer who is most well known for creating gorgeous ball gowns in the 40’s and 50’s. The dress code was “White Tie and Decorations” which in normal human language translates into “a full evening dress for women, and white tie for men.” This is about as fancy as it gets people, so lets dive right into this fashion cornucopia.
Best Dressed: Karolina Kurkova
So. Much. Yes. Karolina Kurcova looks like a real life version of Cinderella in this stunning midnight blue Marchesa gown. Between the hand-painted florals, the structured folds, and the minimal accessories, Karolina hands down wins my vote for best dressed of the night. She totally embodies the fun and whimsical atmosphere of the event and I love that she totally went all in with the theme. If only I could wear a ball gown to the local bars. A girl can dream right?
Dress Code Amnesia
It seems that more than a few celebrities disregarded the dress code for the event this year (Rihanna, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Elizabeth Olsen, I’m lookin’ at you). However, the most disappointing of the night was it-girl Cara Delevingne. Let me start by saying that Cara looks absolutely fabulous in this Stella McCartney ensemble. Seriously though, if I had a body like that I would probably wear crop tops to every event also, but it just wasn’t appropriate for the Met Ball.I love that Cara likes to dress edgy on the red carpet, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have worn a dress! I think she would have totally rocked something á la Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta at the 2011 Golden Globes. My vote is that she should have worn a dress to the Met Ball and then the Stella McCarnety outfit to the after party. Oh and Anna Wintour, just so you know: I PROMISE TO FOLLOW THE DRESS CODE IF YOU INVITE ME TO THE 2015 MET BALL GALA. Just throwing that out there
Ugh. Leave it to Kate Upton to wear an ensemble like this and still look gorgeous. I think the best way to describe my feelings towards this Dolce and Gabana ensemble would be the grimacing face emojii with its teeth bared (you know which one I’m talking about). Everything about this look is just…wrong. Between the ruffles, the sheerness, the corseted bodice, the necklace, the earrings, the rings, the headpiece, it is just WAY too much. A beautiful girl like Kate Upton doesn’t need all these crazy details and accessories. I think she would have looked absolutely stunning in something similar to the Zac Posen dress Christina Hendricks wore to the 2010 Emmy Awards. Oh and Kate, I think whoever styled you for this event has gotsta go.
So there you have it friends! “The Best”, “The Eh”, and “The *head tilt* “oh sweetie, no.” I would have totally went full on ball gown for this event. What would you have worn? Who was your best dressed? Worst dressed? Let me know! I love to hear from you lovely Fashionistas.
